Rooms for Rent

Rooms for Rent

To save money in the months before I left Boston for grad school in the Bay Area, I rented a room in this house instead of paying for an apartment. My room was on the second floor, in the upper right of this shot. In those days the house had a bit of charm and was not -- as it is now -- covered in plastic and graced with "replacement" windows.

The landlady was a widow whose kitchen floor was strewn with kitty litter (it crunched underfoot when you went in there to pay your rent). One day she offered me a slice of cantaloupe in a plastic bowl. A nice gesture, but the cantaloupe's juices left tracks in the dust inside the bowl. She would only rent to guys, saying that having guys and girls together meant certain "things" might go on in her house, which she didn't want. But one day she made an exception and rented the downstairs room (directly under mine) to a dark-haired student who she was sure would respect her concerns. She didn't -- or rather, she and I didn't. We couldn't go to my room because it passed the landlady's apartment (and her bratty, snarling little mutt). And her own bed (brass headboard) was too noisy. So we reserved our intimacies for her floor, whose carpet so threadbare and rough that it left us both with abrasions.

Would You Spend $50 for This?

Would You Spend $50 for This?

Not for the baby, on which you'd all spend $1,000,000, I'm sure --- he's not for sale. Nor for the cool wooden highchair --- we only got that for $100, and still think it was a deal. No, the latest crazy splurge is on the floor covering BELOW Mr. O.

We had a piece of painter's plastic we had crappily cut under his chair. Then, we went to a very sheshe (spelling, Julie?) place by Jason's office, and they had very cute plastic covered fabric. I dreamed about it for a week or two, then went back to buy it. The only trouble? I hadn't looked at the price the first time, and it was $50!!!! For fabric! Plus plastic!!

I stood there, wondering, for about a second. Then I remember how Oliver loves to signal he's done by swiping all of his food off his tray, and I got out the debit card. In my defense --- it even matches the carpet!
